Schools of Hope

Program Overview

When Emery came to Schools of Hope at Southwest Community Campus his reading score was 20 words per minute, though 110 words per minutes was expected. Three months later he was reading 90 words per minute—a 350% increase. That put him in range of his class-level goal. Obviously Schools of Hope, operated by UCOM at Southwest for 1st through 3rd graders, is not the only reason for Emery's vast growth in reading skills.  It is, however, a big piece of the puzzle. Combined with caring teachers, involved parents and his own dedication to learning, Schools of Hope has helped Emery to progress so quickly. Way to go, Emery!

Schools of Hope after-school program is a joint venture of Believe to Become, United Way and several faith- and community-based organizations.  It uses evidence-based curriculum, certified teachers and child-focused programs to help young students to read better. We are currently enrolling young scholars in Schools of Hope's after-school program this year at Southwest Community Campus, supervised by United Church Outreach Ministry (UCOM). We are also still looking for volunteers willing to help with the program!
