UCOM

Farmers Market Rideshare

UCOM will provide transportation for our clients to a new farmers’ market beginning June 2nd. The market is opening in the parking lot of the David D. Hunting YMCA in downtown Grand Rapids.

A big part of being a green community is eating healthy, local, and sustainable foods. Unfortunately for many people this can be a very difficult proposition. Whether because of the high cost of transportation, greater prices, or simply not knowing where to find them, many clients in our area don’t have access to the wonderful farmers markets around town. Starting June, UCOM hopes to change that.

Thursday afternoons during the summer UCOM will be taking between 15-20 clients to the farmers market where they will be able to spend an hour shopping for locally grown and produced foods.

All UCOM clients are welcome to partake in this program, but we especially encourage families with food stamps to join us so they can participate in the new Double Up Food Bucks program. This new program will allow food stamp recipients to spend up to $20 a week at area farmers markets and receive $40 worth of Michigan grown produce.

By taking our clients to the farmers market and teaching them about the new Double Up Food Bucks program we can help break down some of the barriers to healthier, greener eating faced by our clients.
